JULIANA: What am I going to do this summer?Hey Kirsten.

  • 00:42

KIRSTEN: Is that your Spanish paper, Juliana?

  • 00:45

JULIANA: I wish, actually.I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to spend my summer.Everyone says that I should do an internship, but they all look really lame.

  • 00:53

KIRSTEN: I know, right.Working for free for some random company, doing all their crapwork? Not my idea of a worthwhile summer.

  • 01:00

JULIANA: You could take more courses, but spending all summer in class without a break makes me nuts.

  • 01:05

KIRSTEN: Plus you'll just be racking up more and more debt.

  • 01:07

    JULIANA: What are you doing?

  • 01:09

KIRSTEN: About three months worth of laundry. If I'm going to go to AP formal tonight,I'm going to need something clean to wear.

  • 01:14

JULIANA: Not now, I mean this summer.

  • 01:17

KIRSTEN: Oh.Right.Yeah, I'm going to do undergraduate research.

  • 01:22

    JULIANA: What?

  • 01:23

KIRSTEN: I was talking to some people in my lab.And they said I could apply for a grant thatwould pay me to do my own independent projectthis summer.

  • 01:30

JULIANA: You science people have it so easy.

  • 01:34

KIRSTEN: I don't think it's just for people in labs.

  • 01:36

JULIANA: Yeah, but I don't know anything about putting togethera research project. What would I do?Ah, thank you Alvin. You have no idea how much I nee--

  • 01:42

ALVIN: Do not touch.I'm about to do an important service to the world.

  • 01:46

    KIRSTEN: And what is that?

  • 01:47

ALVIN: I am going to show the negative effectsof over-caffeinating yourself. We live in a world that worships the rush of caffeine. And we've become so dependent on it,we don't realize the negative effectsthat it has on our bodies.

  • 01:59

JULIANA: OK, Morgan Spurlock. What are you going to do?

  • 02:02

ALVIN: I am going to drink five shots of espresso and an energydrink.

  • 02:06

    KIRSTEN: That sounds stupid.

  • 02:08

ALVIN: And Kur-stin will record what happens to me on video.

  • 02:11

KIRSTEN: Shut up, Al-veen.You know how much it bugs me whenpeople mispronounce my name.

  • 02:17

ALVIN: OK.Sorry.Kirsten.Will you please assist me?

  • 02:56

    ALVIN: Uh![GARGLING NOISES] Woo.Whoa.

  • 03:14

    KIRSTEN: Impressive.How do you feel?

  • 03:22

ALVIN: Uh.Ah.So, what were you guys talking about?

  • 03:35

JULIANA: What lame options I have for this summer.

  • 03:37

ALVIN: I know, right? This school has seriously dropped the ball on summer. They always say that they value experience. But they need to put their money where their mouth is, OK?We need real opportunities to do our own independent work, dammit. This school needs to support my summer.

  • 03:53

KIRSTEN: You have heard of undergraduate research, haven'tyou?

  • 03:56

    ALVIN: No idea.Sounds stupid.

  • 03:58

KIRSTEN: We have the summer undergraduate research grantprogram that gives students moneyto live on during the family so that theycan do their own independent project that they create.

  • 04:07

    ALVIN: Really?

  • 04:07

    KIRSTEN: Yeah.

  • 04:08

ALVIN: Hmm, glad they were listening.

  • 04:09

JULIANA: If you could get paid to do anything this summer, what would you do?

  • 04:13

ALVIN: That's easy.I'd open up a killer restaurant that just serves pie.No.No, no.I would study what all the great philosopherssaid about something really cool like jokes. No!I would write a totally original movieabout giant space robots that crashed to earthand could turn into cars.

  • 04:31

JULIANA: Didn't they already make that movie?

  • 04:33

    KIRSTEN: Three times.

  • 04:34

ALVIN: No!No, I would open up a school to teach peoplewith depression how to surf.It would be totally awesome!

  • 04:39

KIRSTEN: We live on a lake.

  • 04:40

ALVIN: No!No.I'd get a bunch of tables, and just pile them up.And make this huge table pile thing. No!I could totally learn to fly.Seriously, I feel like I could fly right now.Let's make a parkour video! That would be totally awesome!Let's go!

  • 05:28

    SPEAKER 1: Creamy or crunchy?

  • 05:32

SPEAKER 2: I don't think that is the right question.I think the real question is, what do you want to know?

  • 05:42

    JULIANA: What?

  • 05:44

SPEAKER 2: Instead of focusing on whatyou might do this summer, think about what do Iwant to learn more about?Start there.

  • 05:53

JULIANA: Well, I-- I-- I want to do something that's meaningful?

  • 06:01

SPEAKER 2: That's a great place to start. Now all we have to do is figure outwhat would make a meaningful summer for you.

  • 06:09

JULIANA: But undergraduate research grantsmust be really hard to get, huh?

  • 06:13

SPEAKER 2: They can give away as many as they want.

  • 06:15

JULIANA: Yeah.Hold on a second.Who are you?And what are you wearing?

  • 06:21

KIRSTEN: I told you I don't have many clean options left.

  • 06:23

JULIANA: No, I wasn't talking to you.I was talking to-- where did he go?

  • 06:28

    KIRSTEN: Where who go?

  • 06:29

JULIANA: He was right here.He was dressed like he was in a bad Shakespeare play.

  • 06:33

KIRSTEN: You have to come.Alvin is hanging on a cliff!Don't ask.[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS]

  • 06:47

ALVIN: This seemed like a better idea in my head.
