Sampling, Special Population

A sample in human subjects research is a small group of people who are chosen to represent a larger group of people or a population. Sampling is the process by which this small group of people or sample who represent the larger group or population is chosen. A special population is a particular group of people within the population that a researcher wants to study. Examples of special populations might include children, the elderly, people who share the same race or ethnicity, people who all have a particular medical condition, prisoners, people who all work for the same company, people who all use the same product, and the list goes on.
