The planning of a research project should be given as much, if not more, thought and effort than the actual implementation of the project. The reason planning is so vital is because without a good plan, the implementation of the project will likely falter, and therefore the results from the project will be difficult to interpret. Planning helps to ensure that the results obtained are a direct result of the project, and not some extraneous factors. Good planning also helps to make sure the project stays on topic, on budget, and on time, so what a researcher thought would be a six-week project does not end up taking six months.
