An Introduction to Extended Reality for Social Science Research

Abstract

This guide introduces the technologies that are taken to comprise Extended Reality or XR. The component technologies are differentiated, and their key features, benefits, and limitations outlined before the requisite software and content for those technologies are addressed. Three different ways to use the technology are discussed with examples from the Social Sciences – using XR as the topic of research, as the means of research, and as the mode of dissemination. Finally, some simple first steps to using XR are offered so that readers can experience using a form of XR immediately and for free.
