Abstract

Asynchronous interviews are a qualitative digital research method in which participants respond to questions communicated to them via information and communication technologies (ICTs) and online platforms such as email, audio, video, social media, apps, online forums, and chat rooms. They provide opportunities for participants to reflect on the interview questions and to respond to questions during an agreed period of time.

This How-to Guide provides a summary of asynchronous interviews and the various forms they can take. It outlines how to design asynchronous interviews and highlights their advantages and disadvantages. It also outlines some of the key methodological debates concerning the shift to online asynchronous interviews as a result of COVID-19, in contrast to traditional face-to-face interviews. Following this overview, the guide will provide practical assistance to researchers who are designing and executing asynchronous interviews.
