Ethnography has long been utilised in education research because of the insights offered when embedded with a particular setting or group. More recently, institutional ethnography (IE) in education has emerged as offering further possibilities in the development of new knowledge because of its development as both a theory and method in revealing the social relations of people’s everyday lives with a particular focus on standpoint and textual mediation. However, IE is distinct from the many other branches of ethnography in that they must always move beyond the analysis of the microlocal context. Consequently, IE scholars connect through their ontological commitment to examine what and how “ruling relations” and sometimes the interacting “economic relations” operationalise within and beyond an institution.
