An adjustment used in connection with the chisquare statistic. It is usually employed in connection with 2 × 2 contingency tables and is sometimes used to improve the accuracy of tables with small cell frequencies. It is used less frequently than in the past because of concerns that it may actually increase the chances of making a type II error. Essentially, the correction results in a smaller chi-square value and therefore a more conservative approach to chi-square, because it makes statistical significance more difficult to establish.
