This variable is simply a categorization of cases. It allows us to show that the cases are different in terms of the categories, and no more than that. For example, unlike an ordinal variable, we are not able to rank order the categories in any way. An example of a nominal variable is the voting behavior of a sample. We can classify members of the sample in terms of the political party for which they voted at the most recent election, but we cannot infer any more about the differences between people in terms of that classification.
