Finite mixture model is another name for LATENT CLASS ANALYSIS. These models assume that parameters of a statistical model of interest differ across unobserved subgroups called latent classes or mixture components. The most important kinds of applications of finite mixture models are clustering, scaling, density estimation, and RANDOM-EFFECTS MODELING.
