An independent variable is any variable that is held to have a causal impact on another variable, referred to as the DEPENDENT VARIABLE. The notion of what can be taken to be an independent variable varies between experimental and nonexperimental research (see entries on INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH) and INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (IN NONEXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH).
