Coding and Analyzing Semi-Structured Interviews: First-Generation Latinx College Students’ Perceptions of How Family Relationships Impact Their College Success
This exemplar demonstrates thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews exploring how families of first-generation Latinx college students impact their college success. The data are provided by Dr. Jennifer A. Strangfeld in the Department of Sociology, Gerontology, and Gender Studies at California State University, Stanislaus. The purpose of this exemplar is to illustrate a step-by-step process students can use to analyze qualitative data, from the coding phase through thematic development. It will be most useful for those using transcribed semi-structured interview data focused in areas of sociological inquiry, particularly higher education research. A Teaching and Student Guide accompany this dataset.
