To explore the contemporary impact of gender on the practice of medicine, this project examined attitudes, values, and perceptions of the workplace among women physicians by means of field observation, informal interviews, and analysis of organizational websites. It focused on two organizations for women physicians, the Medical Women's International Association and the American Medical Women's Association, including its Gender Equity Task Force. An online resource site for women physicians and a funding program announcement were also considered. As a qualitative study seeking emergent themes, the methods employed are discussed with particular attention to entering the field, developing a research question and strategy, unit of analysis, sampling, establishing and maintaining rapport, using websites, multiple methods, drawing conclusions, and recognizing limitations.
