This case study presents an overview of methods used to carry out an exploratory mixed-methods ethnographic study of video bloggers, or vloggers, on YouTube. Vlogs can be used as a multimedia data source for researchers who wish to explore topics such as digital culture or self-expression in social media environments. A combination of online ethnography and descriptive research methods were used to investigate school-related vlogging about school. This research case unpacks the processes involved in designing and implementing the study. Topics covered include identification of research questions, how research methods were selected and applied, some of the challenges encountered in sampling from YouTube, how data were analyzed, and ethical issues encountered while completing the study.
