A Qualitative Research Project Adapted From a Quantitative Study and for Virtual Working in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Lessons


This case study examines the challenges and lessons encountered during a research process developed virtually, in which we adapted a quantitative study to a qualitative case in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting research online presented both challenges and potential lessons that we were not aware of at the outset of our project. These reflections are based on six interviews with members of the research project. We learned that social aspects such as group dynamics, leadership, conflict resolution, trust-building, and communication are critical when undertaking qualitative research virtually. These compensate for the absence of some elements in face-to-face work, such as richer communication channels and broader forms of social interaction (formal and informal), as well as more agile ways of reconciling doubts, differences, or conflicts. In response to these challenges, careful consideration of the structure of the project and the technological tools used made it possible to support the virtual research to achieve its goals. We also conclude that adapting methods to similar studies is an interesting practice that needs to be done carefully.
