Practical Guide to Conducting Cross-Sectional Studies (Quantitative) in a Community Setting

Abstract

This case study describes our cross-sectional study of butchering practices in a community in Nepal, to determine the level of knowledge of butchers regarding hygienic practices as well as the state of hygiene in butcher shops. We chose a snapshot cross-sectional study using interviews and on-site observation, as we were limited in funds and required to complete the study within 6 months. We explain the planning, design, implementation, and lessons learned of our study. While the cross-sectional methodology has limitations, when time and financial constraints come into play, this methodology can be effective as a way to create a baseline. This case study will help other researchers and students learn how to run a cross-sectional study and develop solutions to some of its challenges.
