Online Surveys: Investigating Social Media Use and Online Risk

Abstract

This case walks the reader through a recent study investigating social media use and online risk behaviour. Online surveys have many advantages but they also provide their own unique challenges. By sharing our experiences, we highlight the issues that one may face when recruiting for an online survey and offer our advice on how to overcome these obstacles. Topics include thinking about sample bias, where to recruit online, how to use snowball sampling, overcoming challenges around recruiting minors and how to design your survey to appeal to potential participants. The demographics of the sample are also discussed.
