This case is a narrative summary of the research journey the author made towards her PhD thesis. Through a flexible and adaptive response to a shifting research question, the author employed a methodology sensitive to identity work and added to understandings of being an actor in international development, specifically in the field of child welfare in China. The use of methods that facilitated the examination of the social construction of success, the production of expert identities and moral authority and the performative nature of the cultural context produced insights into how the social practices that form an international non-governmental organisation unfold.
