Using Hierarchical Analysis to Understand Immigrants’ Political Participation in the United States

Abstract

Migrants grow up in various places all over the world before moving to and settling in destination countries such as the United States. To understand immigrants’ political behavior, it is important to consider their individual characteristics such as socioeconomic status as well as their origin country experiences prior to migration. To account for these individual-, country-, and region-level factors, we use hierarchical analysis in our article “Why Do Immigrants Participate in Politics Less than Native-Born Citizens? A Formative Years Explanation” (currently work in progress). This case study uses this article as an example to explain when and how to use hierarchical analysis in political science research, with an emphasis on model construction and interpretation.
