Developing Grounded Theory About the Patient Role in Medication Administration Safety: A Research Methods Case

Abstract

This research case is about a grounded theory study designed to further understanding of the role of the hospitalized patient in medication administration safety. Confirming Delivery was the core category identified in the study and represented the role of the patient from the perspectives of the patient participants (24) and the nursing staff participants (27) on three family medicine units. The purpose of this case report is to provide an overall description of the project, the methods used, the primary challenges encountered, and resolution of those challenges. Following the project overview and methods, three challenges are presented: recruitment, data analysis, and writing grounded theories for peer-reviewed journals with word limitations. Resolutions for these challenges are described followed by the case conclusion.
