Developing Video Vignettes for Use in Youth Mental Health Research: A Case Study

Abstract

This case study explores the use of video vignettes with young people to explore the topic of depression labeling. Video vignettes were recorded using “actors” (12 male undergraduate students, 18 years of age or older). Four of the 12 vignettes were used during data collection as the stimuli to elicit reactions to depression from adolescents. Study data were collected across four schools in Dublin, Ireland, in 2014 and the sample consisted of 156 adolescents (80 female, 76 male). This case study considers the use of vignettes in social science research, the benefits of using video vignettes over written vignettes, and some ethical and methodological issues to consider when constructing video vignettes for use in research.
