In this case, we describe the experience of conducting a qualitative study on an understudied topic, partner abuse, in a vulnerable and stigmatized population, sexual minority men living with HIV. The study faced multiple challenges related to the design, human research protection, funding, and coordinating across stakeholders—all made more difficult by the fact that the researcher was a novice in this area.
