Scripts and Spelling

As a visual/graphic representation of language, writing makes use of graphic resources that do not exist in speech. In this chapter, we look more closely at what those resources are, how they can be used, and what meanings are communicated by the choices writers make about them. Our discussion will emphasize that how words are written is not a purely technical question, but may also have social and political implications.
