The terrain of teacher education is potentially very extensive. The term ‘teacher education’ on its own usually refers just to teacher preparation, occurring prior to becoming a regular teacher; other names (in English) for this include pre-service teacher education and initial teacher education (ITE). However, our concern in this chapter is with teacher education in a broader sense, embracing both pre-service and in-service professional learning, and connections between the two. In-service teacher education again has several other names: for example, in-service professional development, ongoing teacher learning, continuing professional development (CPD), or simply professional development (PD).
