The Handbook of Research Management is a unique tool for the newly promoted research leader. Much of the research endeavour is undertaken in solitude. Conceiving the idea; analysing the data; drafting the proposal and manuscripts – much of what we do is done on a keyboard in front of a terminal, by ourselves. But as research designs, measures, and methods of analysis all become more specialized, it has become less and less common for one individual to possess all of the skills required for the successful completion of even a moderately-complex research project. Thus, the coordinating and collaborative dimension of research is becoming more and more important.
