Introduction

This chapter discusses how a digital online thesis can be a suitable model for practice-based PhDs within the discipline of art and design. It draws from precedents within the field, including my own PhD submission Zeppelinbend: multiplicity, encyclopaedic strategies and non-linear methodologies for a visual practice (2010) Leeds Metropolitan University. It investigates how a digital submission offers a differentiated approach for a reader, who then becomes an active user, drawing parallels with Aarseth's (1997) perspectives on digital literature and interactivity. Part of this discussion will necessitate a brief consideration of how such theses might generate greater dissemination of the work while the immaterial form may pose questions of authorship and copyright.
