Research, and the library and information services support research have been transformed by information communications technology, with the pace of change accelerating rather than slowing down. At the same time there is considerable uncertainty in the wider higher education environment stimulated by financial, demographic, global and economic factors. Following the recent review of the UK higher education chaired by Lord Browne of Madingley1, wide-ranging changes may now lead to a concentration of research funding, divergence of the sector and potential mergers. Taken together, these trends will impact to a greater or lesser extent on all library and information service provision.
