Introduction

In 2006, I conducted a literature search of PhD theses on the subject of drawing. I found a few, by researchers in the UK, that I was able to order from the British Library. They arrived on microfilm. I remember sitting at the large viewing apparatus, having struggled to thread the film, scrolling through pages in linear fashion. In some cases, the thesis was reproduced onto the film in negative, and unless there was an optical mechanism to reverse it, words would appear glowing from a darkened ground on the large screen above me, often accompanied by a constellation of other bright spots and scratches – noise ...
