Technologies come in all shapes. When they appear in the form of gadgets – ‘appliances’ – for the production and dissemination of messages, they attract attention, much more than the less ‘noticeable’ technologies of representation, such as speech, writing, image, gesture. This chapter deals with technologies of both kinds; and sets a consideration of both in their relation to research and ‘the PhD’ in the context of ‘the wider social’.
