No phenomenon can be reliably studied if it cannot be measured. The advancement of psychological science, like any other science, depends on how validly and reliably we can measure the phenomena that we study. However, nearly half of the published studies in psychology create at least one test of their own making. That means that many of the measures used in psychological research depend wholly on face or content validity. My story is one of not taking the time to use the best measure available. It is a story of how accepting that self-made measure led to an erroneous conclusion.
