I study speech communication, and when I came to the University of Chicago in the Department of Psychology, I met another new faculty member, Dan Margoliash, who studies birdsong. We wanted to develop a research collaboration to study communication systems generally. There is a long history of research comparing human speech use with birdsong (see Doupe & Kuhl, 1999).
