My biggest research mistake was my dissertation. It didn’t give me a firm platform for launching a research program, and as I took up teaching and committee responsibilities and faced an initial tenure evaluation in five years, I spent a lot of time in panic and confusion. I’ll tell the story in the hope that it provides some guidance for early career researchers, even though it was long ago and far away, in a world with very different norms and customs. Maybe those practices will be interesting, too, in an historical vein.
