When I began working in the field of speech perception in the late 1960s, there were no personal computers available for research. The lack of computers made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to carry out novel experimental research using synthesized speech signals unless you were able to work at Haskins Laboratories or MIT where there were computer-controlled speech synthesizers. To do research on speech perception, it was necessary to make reel-to-reel audiotapes of your test stimuli and play them back to listeners. This was the way we did research back in the day.
