An overarching theme of my research, starting 40 years ago, has been how individual differences in cognitive processes can help us gain a better understanding of how the mind works in general and how they relate to complex cognitive tasks in everyday life. In particular, rather than using psychometric tests, I have tried to measure these individual differences in experiments that were informed by theories about very specific cognitive processes. My biggest mistake occurred in 2009, relates back to the very beginning of my research, and speaks to the value of “old” data.
