Every method of meta-analysis is of necessity based on a theory of data. It is this theory (or understanding of data) that determines the nature of the resulting meta-analysis methods. A complete theory of data includes an understanding of sampling error, measurement error, biased sampling (range restriction and range enhancement), dichotomization and its effects, data errors, and other causal factors that distort the raw data results we see in research studies. Once a theoretical understanding of how these factors affect data is developed, it becomes possible to develop methods for correcting for their effects.
