The life course is an important topic of research in the social sciences. Autobiographical material and numerous qualitative studies provide a wealth of data not only for psychologists and sociologists but also for historians and scholars in other disciplines. The German Life History Study (GLHS) described here differs from such qualitative studies in several important aspects. Most important, it deals primarily with numerical or quantitative information such as the timing of events and characteristics of activities as opposed to narratives about lives.
