In this brief chapter, the basics of the major statistical distributions are discussed. Instead of a focus on the derivation of individual distributions, the goal of this chapter is to present the reader with the relationships of the major distributions with the standard normal distribution.

Understanding these relationships is important to recognize the key distributions in this volume: the t and F distributions. In the later chapters, we work with more complex samples that force us to work with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) models (where one factor is a sample of groups).
