Global Studies Research is a research methods textbook designed for interdisciplinary International Studies majors and their faculty. The textbook introduces interdisciplinarity, provides basic building blocks of relevant disciplinary knowledge, explains a process for integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines, and models this interdisciplinary International Studies Research Process in its presentation of the case studies.


The complexity of our world—including globalization, global issues, global actors and their interactions, and differing perspectives—means that research can be more fruitful when it is interdisciplinary, building on valuable disciplinary research. Using the jigsaw puzzle metaphor, completed puzzle pictures benefit from more and more-varied puzzle pieces through interdisciplinary research. We can define Global Studies, a subset of general interdisciplinary studies, as a process that utilizes the social sciences and other relevant disciplines to describe, analyze, and explain how the world works and prompt solutions for managing the complex global problems in our world.
