What is the moderator’s job in a focus group? Another label for this role is facilitator, so it is useful to say that the moderator facilitates the discussion in the sense of helping it happen. This means that there would be either less discussion without the moderator or a less productive and useful discussion. Rather than thinking of the moderator as generating or directing the discussion, the idea of facilitating the discussion helps put the moderator in a less central position.
