The place and role of the literature in action research is frequently a matter for debate and discussion, and occasionally a contentious matter. For proponents of a purist grounded theory approach, the literature should follow the initial data collection and analysis, its choice being guided by the preliminary analysis. The function of the literature in this case is to help interrogate and illuminate the data, aiding analysis.
