It is very important to understand each variable in the dataset. However, it is rare that univariate statistics can answer our research question. We are far more interested in whether or not there are associations between our variables and what those associations mean.

An association between two variables means they will vary together in a pattern. This means that as one variable goes up or down, an associated variable will either go up or down. If both variables go up together, then they have a positive association. For example, as years of education completed goes up, income also goes up. Education and income have a positive association.
