Both SPSS and Excel can easily be used to compute the range, standard deviation, and variance.

To use Excel to compute these measures of variability you can use either the software’s individual functions or the Data Analysis ToolPak. We assume that you have already entered some data as a column of values.

To use the functions, follow these steps:

  • To compute the standard deviation, enter one of the following functions in any free cell (although entering it right below the data is most useful):
    • =STDEV.P to compute the population’s standard deviation
    • =STDEV.S to compute the sample’s standard deviation
