What Is a t-Test Between Independent Means, and What Is an Example of How It Is Used?
A t-test between independent means is used to test for the significance of differences between two averages from different groups. The obtained score is a function of subtracting one mean from the other and then dividing by an error term. The error term is made up of the amount of variance, or individual differences, within groups. Basically, the larger the difference between the groups, and the more similar each individual is to the others within each group, the larger the t value will be. A larger t value is more extreme and less likely to occur by chance.
