Hypotheses are used in deductive, quantitative projects; a statement is made at the beginning of the project and then that theory is tested in data collection and analysis. Qualitative projects explore data related to research questions, which are typically informed by an overarching research problem statement. The research project is inductive, with theory generated from data.
