In the preceding question, we touched on descriptive statistics. In particular, we distinguished between mean (the average) and median (the middle score). You might be asking, why is there more than one way to describe the middle of a distribution? Think about why the housing industry uses the median as an estimate of house values and not the mean. Likely, this is because there tend to be a few houses at the very high end of every market that drive the mean price higher, so it is not an accurate indication of what average home prices are, because it’s not the true middle anymore.
