Scales, Forced Choice

Forced choice is a format for question responses that requires respondents to provide an answer (e.g., yes or no), forcing them to make judgments about each response option. The forced choice question format is often used in web-based and paper surveys in communication and media studies because it requires respondents to deeply process each question and response option. Consequently, it usually takes respondents a longer time to complete questions of this type in comparison to other question formats (e.g., check-all question format).
