Social epistemology analyzes the processes of human knowing, and products of human knowledge, as collective acts. Practitioners of social epistemology work in and across fields such as library and information science, analytic philosophy, and science and technology studies (STS). As a social research method, social epistemology affords both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The choice of approach depends, at least in part, on where the researcher initially locates knowledge—in the individual or in society—why the researcher studies knowledge as either an empirical or conceptual matter, and how the researcher defines the dynamic of knowledge and rationality. This entry examines the development of social epistemology, its concerns over time, and some of the fields in which it has had the greatest impact.
