Investigating Materiality and Meaning in Workspaces Through Photo-Elicitation Interviews

Abstract

For a study on the material and meaningful aspects of organizational spaces, I needed a method that would allow me to talk to participants about their interpretations of workspaces while also having some kind of access to that space. To conduct this study, I used photo-elicitation interviews. In photo-elicitation interviews, photos serve as the basis for an interview. Participants in this study took pictures of their workspace that served as the foundation for an interview about organizational spaces. The photos offered an additional way for participants to create meaning (through how they framed the pictures) and also offered me a way to see the material aspects of participants’ workspaces during the interview.
