Case
Abstract
This case provides an account of a year-long project from start to finish and is designed to give new researchers an insight into qualitative methodologies. The research presented is taken from a recent year-long study that was commissioned by a local authority and carried out by staff at Nottingham Trent University. The study focussed on two substance use services specifically for young people: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Targeted Support. Using a mixed methodology, interviews were conducted with young people who were either (a) at the time receiving treatment from either of the services or (b) used substances, but were not at the time referred to a substance use service. The interviews formed part of the qualitative data and larger data set required by the commissioners. This case study reflects on the challenges of working with young people in research and the demands of service evaluation.
