On the Conduct of Systematic Reviews: Using Demineralized Bone Matrix to Augment Tendon–Bone Healing as a Case Study

Abstract

We recently published a systematic review that aimed to summarize current research in whether demineralized bone matrix could be used to augment tendon–bone healing and identify gaps in the literature on this topic for future investigation. By use of this review as a case study, we explore the key steps of a systematic review: setting inclusion/exclusion criteria, selecting databases to search, defining key words for the search strategy, screening search results for relevance, extracting data from the included papers, and interpreting the findings. In doing so, we provide a model through which readers can enhance their familiarity with the process of systematic review and draw lessons regarding what works and what does not work so well.
