Conducting Transcultural Psychometric Validations of Questionnaires: From One Language to Another

Abstract

To illustrate how to psychometrically validate a questionnaire that was originally drawn up in another language, this case draws on the example of an anglophone five-factor questionnaire of drinking motives that we recently validated in French. The case walks the reader through the validation process, including the choice of the questionnaire and its translation from English to French (and back again). We explain the importance of scale reliability (Cronbach’s alpha), in addition to troubleshooting techniques when things do not go as planned. Then we explain how to validate our multidimensional model using confirmatory factor analysis and how to investigate concurrent validity with a pertinent outcome (e.g., alcohol consumption) using regression analyses. The reader should leave with a basic comprehension of the utility and implementation of the quantitative methods employed.
